A Living Pool breathing life into and urban garden right in the heart of the city
This Living Pool has brought an urban garden to life, transforming it into an oasis for wildlife and giving our clients a beautiful, recreational space to enjoy all year round.
Designed to work within the confines of a long, narrow garden this vibrant Living Pool gives our clients the best of both worlds. A swim zone 10m x 3m perfect for swimming lengths. And a small regeneration zone 9m2 to the side planted with water liles, oxygenators and colourful marginals, gives ambience and attracts wildlife.
The pool is filtered by Biotop's Living Pool filtration system, which sits neatly under an L shaped sun deck, accessed by deck hatches.
We constructed larch wooden coping on the internal swim zone walls and finished the pool's external walls with larch coping too.
Once we had finished constructing the pool we set about landscaping our client's garden, planting a naturalistic border to one side of the pool with colourful perennials to attract pollinators, grading and seeding a new lawn area, planting trees and laying perennial meadow turf to enclose a circular lawn tucked away at the end of the garden and border a long path.
Constructing this pool was a challenge. You will see on the construction photos how narrow the entrance is. The pool was excavated using a small 2.5 ton digger, all spoil was brought out to the side of the road one load at a time and removed by a grab lorry twice a day. Materials and aggregates were brought in by barrow and hand. All thanks to our skilled construction manager and team.
We love how the pool is enjoyed and used so often, our clients swim through winter and it's easy to see how they spill out of their back door and enjoy the space around the water.
This urban garden is a haven for wildlife and our clients. When you open the gate and walk in - what a transformation!
