Two very different special gardens designed specially for the community in Retford.
The hospice garden provides visitors and patients a tranquil outdoor space for spending time together.
Several years ago I was asked to design a garden for Retford Hospice. This was one of the most emotional projects I have worked on. The finished garden is a retreat for patients and their visitors to spend time together outside in a peaceful, uplifting space. A generous and smooth block paved path runs around the garden, curving through borders leading to smaller seating areas positioned amongst the borders and a pavilion where different therapies take place, and finishing at the pergola where wisteria and fragrant climbers create a shaded seating place for larger groups to linger.
The garden was designed with views out from patients' bedroom windows onto uplifting mixed planting with perennials, grasses, thousands of bulbs, fragrant shrubs and specimen trees creating a changing landscape throughout the seasons.
The hospice is a wonderful place with the most amazing staff and carers. I enjoyed working on this project so much, especially seeing how much the garden is used and enjoyed, and how it allows families and patients to spend precious time together outside, surrounded by beautiful flowers.
